Port Community & Maritime Profile
The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) is a public utility state enterprise under the general supervision of the Ministry of Transport with an objective to conduct the business pertaining to the port for the interest of the state and public. The main duties of the PAT are providing services and facilities to vessels and cargoes, conducting dredging and maintenance of the bar channels and basins, handling, moving, storing and delivering of cargoes to the consignee, coordinating and cooperating with the government agencies concerned and international ports, developing its organization to cope with the economic situation, and participating in corporate social responsibility. As the PAT is a government organization, its operations are carried out for the benefit of the country and its people. For almost seven decades of business, the PAT has always given high priority to all stakeholders especially the communities it operates in to ensure favorable reputation and relationships. Because the success of the PAT to date - as well its success in the future - is due to the effort and hard work of its devoted staff, the organization also places great value on their happiness, and works hard to promote teamwork and healthy relationships. In terms of ASEAN connectivity, it is obvious that Thailand has efficiency of infrastructure due to the form of well-connected road and highway network across the country. Moreover, the framework for Greater Mekong Sub-region Cooperation which encourages the development of basic infrastructures including transportation, telecommunication and energy, is one of the factors that boosts the PAT to becoming a Sub-regional Gateway. The Economic Corridors linking Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Viet Nam and Southern China will support trade and economic activities within this sub-region and also ASEAN. Today, the Eastern Economic Corridor Development Project (EEC) has risen as a new large-scale investment, which sets its sights on new and unprecedented levels of development under the “Thailand 4.0” initiative. The development of various infrastructures will generate numerous opportunities in the surrounding areas such as encouraging industries, job creation and boosting local economies. The development of Laem Chabang Port Phase III is also one of the crucial mechanisms in supporting the scheme.
The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) currently manages 2 main ports and 3 regional ports namely Bangkok Port (BKP), Laem Chabang Port (LCP), Chiang Saen Commercial Port, Chiang Khong Port and Ranong Port. Management of each port varies with different levels of control and private participation. Bangkok Port is owned and operated by the PAT which acts as a service provider for all port-related services. For Laem Chabang Port, the PAT takes more of a landlord role, with port operations privatized to several companies under the PAT’s supervision. For the regional ports, port operations and services are managed under the administration of the PAT. In pursuing the PAT’s vision to be a world class port with excellent logistics services for sustainable growth in 2030, Laem Chabang Port will be developed into an Innovative World Class Port and Gateway to the Greater Mekong Sub-region and ASEAN. At Bangkok Port, the PAT is focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment and training to increase port efficiency.
